This abandoned hotel located in the Catskills, has been left vacant since a fire in October 2000 that led to the destruction of the lobby, the two-story office, the conference area, the kitchen, and the nightclub. The Hotel began its life as a boarding house in 1903 when its first owner relocated to the Catskills for health issues related to tuberculosis. It later came into the hands of his grandson, F. Gasthalter, who expanded the property with additional buildings over the years. During the 1960s, the hotel became a favored spot for hunters looking for a clean and accommodating place to stay that offered early breakfast options. Under Fred's leadership, it joined a well-known franchise and was renamed. Gasthalter regarded this affiliation as "the greatest thing yet." On October 16, 2000, around 3 AM, the front desk received a call about smoke coming from the kitchen. The clerk promptly alerted 911 about the situation. In response, over 100 firefighters from six different companies arrived on the scene. While they prevented the entire hotel from being destroyed, they were unable to save the lobby, nightclub, kitchen, and offices. The day before the fire, the hotel had been hosting a Jewish educational program, and some guests were still in residence. The incident was described as a "Nightmare," as it required the evacuation of more than 300 guests, including many seniors and individuals with disabilities. In 2004, The hotel property was sold following the bankruptcy of its last operating owner. Although there were plans announced for redevelopment, none of these came to fruition. As of December 2024, the property is back on the market. Drone footage shared by the realtor shows that, while the hotel is still standing, two decades of neglect and vandalism have reduced it to mere building shells.
