The Saratoga County Homestead, commonly referred to as the Homestead Sanitarium was a prominent tuberculosis sanatorium situated in the hamlet of Barkersville, also known as East Galway, in Providence, New York. It is officially listed as The Homestead Sanitarium and can be found on County Highway 16. Opened in 1914, the facility operated as a treatment center for tuberculosis patients until 1960. The original wooden structure was replaced in 1932 with the current brick building. In 1961, the facility was repurposed as The Saratoga County Infirmary. In the 1980s, the building was sold by Saratoga County to Bruce Houran, who aimed to restart it as a healthcare facility. The property has been unoccupied since then but remains intact. It has drawn the attention of paranormal enthusiasts hoping to experience ghostly encounters. The Homestead was sold in a tax auction in September 2019 to James Walk from Corinth, Texas. He plans to renovate the site and is currently collaborating with local contacts to arrange photography tours, to eventually allow access to most sections of the hospital. The first focus of the rehabilitation will be the caretaker's house. Walk's plans include creating a veterans’ retreat, adding local businesses, establishing an agricultural training program, developing outdoor gardens, and setting up a living museum to commemorate the location's history as a tuberculosis hospital.
